Training and development – a cost or an investment for your business?
It is the middle of the year already – where does time go? We have had another busy and productive month at Pod HQ, undertaking consulting across the HR and organisational development spectrums – working with clients on projects ranging from preparing employment agreements, induction processes, psychometric testing to immigration assistance for new employees and devising new workshops and e-learning modules for employers.
This month we focus on the ongoing development of employees. Having recruited your new employee through effective selection methods, and having successfully inducted them into your business, you now need to facilitate their ongoing development to help them grow personally and professionally. The immediate benefits can result in greater job satisfaction for your employees, higher retention, improved performance and productivity to name but a few of the positive outcomes.

Career Development
Often employers wonder just why they should develop the ‘careers’ of their team – think of the cost, think of the downtime for training, worst still, what if you provide training and extend their abilities and they up and leave to develop their ‘career’ elsewhere!! However, in our opinion, the benefits of introducing a career development programme within your business – however small, are immense and should not be ignored.

They can help guide the development of individual employees and ensure that the goals that your team are working to are in alignment with the overall objectives of the business. Find out how to use a performance appraisal for development purposes.

Pod's Poll
Last month we wanted to know ‘Do you have an induction plan for new employees?’ 100% said ‘yes’ and 0% said ‘no.’ This is an encouraging result as it demonstrates that those responding to our survey are committed to ensuring that their new employees are receiving training aimed to help them successfully integrate into their new team, the business culture and the role itself.
This month we want to know ‘Do you believe that ongoing professional training is the responsibility of the business or the employee? The business, the employee or both?
The prize for voting last month was a full induction plan review and programme design for any position within your business, valued at $500 -$1000 depending on the level of the position. Congratulations to Steve Maserow at Howick Barfoot and Thompson who won this prize for his business.
